Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
