Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
