No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
